An atom that would usually be found hanging around in pairs, has an odd number of electrons and is highly reactive. If chlorine is exposet to ultraviolet light, it splits into free radicals, which allow it to react. Vigorously.

Ah. That probably explains why free radicals are so dangerous in the body then.
